Christmas cake festival organised in Guwahati

TO CELEBRATE the advent of Christmas, a cake festival was organised in Guwahati. Assamese actresses Nishita Goswami, Gayatri Mahanta and Kashmiri Saikia Baruah inaugurated the festival.

The festival was organised by the cookery and bakery section of the Centre for Alternative Vocation (CAV), a voluntary organisation which works in the north-eastern states and mainly focuses on the development of youth and women, by providing livelihood support and strengthening educational status.

Goswami said the festival is a good platform for women who are interested in baking.

“The special thing about this festival is it does not only display cakes, and it displays various confectionaries as well. What I fell is it's a huge platform for the ladies who are interested in this particular field, and it's a good platform for them,” she said.

The flavour and colours of Christmas were everywhere as customers purchased cakes and a man dressed up as Santa Claus delighted children.

“Like the cake is sweet, in the same way people of Assam and whole northeast are sweet, and I would like to give my wishes that peace remains in the whole of Assam and northeast,” said Shidartha Mukharjee, who had donned the Santa Claus costume.

This festival was an exhibition as well as a sale programme where Christmas cakes like plum cake, fruitcake, rum cake and other non-vegetarian cakes were on sale.

The festival is being organised from December 21 to 23. Christmas will be celebrated across the world on Saturday December 25.

People to shop online than going church on Christmas Day

An estimated 4.8 million people will  shop online on Christmas Day, get out their credit cards, and buy products, according to the trade body IMRG which represents online retailers. This is 9% increase on last year and compares with an estimated 4.5 million people who attend an Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist or Pentecostal church services on Christmas Day.

It will be for the first time that more people likely to shop than worshiping on December 25, proving how the internet has rendered the Sunday Trading Laws obsolete. It is also  demonstration of how many consumers spend their lives with almost immediate access to the internet, with either a mobile phone, laptop or computer or even camera able to surf the web at the touch of a button.

It is expected that the hundreds and thousands of so-called tablet computers such as the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy which will be given as presents this year will result in many people unwrapping them and immediately going online to buy applications, games or films to watch on these small touch-screen computers.

IMRG  also said that on Christmas Day itself £153 million would be expected to spent, with a further £300 million spent on Boxing Day.

Christmas 2010 is around: Know the main traditions of the festival

THE LITERATURE reveals that the history of winter or December time festival dates back over 4000 years. It is said that the festival traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ Child was born and gained eventual acceptance of the Church to be the part of Christmas Day.
According to the ancient descriptions, the 'Twelve Days of Season' had the traditions of lighting fires, the Yule log, carnivals, carols, feasts and processions and all were observed by early Mesopotamians.

Furthermore, members of the pagan order celebrated the Winter Solstice or Saturnalia. During the celebrations, the Roman halls would be cleaned and decked with garlands of laurel and green trees adorned with lighted candles.
As Christianity spread, the Church tried to prohibit Saturnalia revelry and the pagan festivals held in December, but it was to no avail. Eventually, a decision was made to tame such celebrations and make them into a festive occasion better suited to honour the Christian Son of God and as 2010 Christmas Day.

The literal meaning of Christmas is ‘Christ's Mass’ and is the celebration of Jesus Christ's birth and baptism in December. With some controversy, the Christmas Day is now largely accepted to be celebrated on December 25.
Some common and mainstay Christmas traditions are as follows:

Colours: The colours most often associated with Christmas 2010 decorating are green, red, white, blue, silver and gold. These colours have been used for centuries and as with most traditions, the reason may be traced to religious beliefs.

Snow: Snow has an important significance in Christmas traditions. So the festival days are full with fun activities on snow playing such as making snowman, skiing, snow boarding, sled riding, etc.

Wreath: Christmas 2010 days exclusively represent greenness to represent life and vitality. In these days, evergreen is worshipped as a holy entity representing eternal life and the crown of Jesus.

Yule log: Yule logs are a part of red oak trees. They are burned during Christmas 2010 Eve and Christmas 2010 Day.

Cookies:

The cookies are left for Santa to appease him and thanksgiving occasion.

Santa Claus:

This tradition is as old as fourth century. Santa Clause was born on the memory of Saint Nicholas for his loving and caring nature towards children by giving the gifts.

Christmas trees:

This was made popular during the rein of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert by bringing a tree inside the Palace and decorating it with apples and other pretty things.
England also has the tradition of hanging stockings to receive Santa's presents. The tradition of Christmas celebration is very old but keeps on evolving with time.

Traditionally, it involves 12 days of Christmas 2010 Season with mainly dazzling fires, the Yule log, and exchange of gifts, feasts, carols, and the church processions as the integral parts of Christmas traditions.

Michelle Obama goes 'Vintage' for Christmas in Washington

US FIRST Lady, Michelle Obama is taking diplomats’ fashion scene to an all new level. She  is famous for making path breaking  fashion statements as far as being First Lady is concerned. Although, she received some flak from the fashion industry for her dresses in India but she is again in news for creating waves.

Recently, she was spotted in a one-of-a-kind vintage dress by late designer Normal Norell, at “Christmas in Washington” concert in Washington, DC. She picked a black-lace overlay dress, which had a full tea-length tulle style skirt and a square neckline and carried it off with panache! This comes in news as well that she might be the first American First Lady to have worn such a vintage dress in public.

Michelle Obama has always been in news for her immaculate fashion sense and choice of dresses. Be it Carla Bruni, Hilary Clinton or Michelle Obama, they all give serious thought into the kind of clothes they don at various public events.

Christmas is round the corner and it seems all western nations are high on Christmas spirit. Back home too Christmas seems to have caught up and the youth seems to be relishing the Christmas season to the fullest.

Michelle Obama goes 'Vintage' for Christmas in Washington

Paris Hilton has released her Christmas Card for 2010 and it's really something to talk about.

Wearing not much, the heiress poses in a gold chair wearing a skimpy silver sparkling dress and rocking a stoic expression. She looks very sultry and seductive ,something everyone looks forward to on Christmas.

Hilton had an interview with Radar Online in which she said, "Christmas is my favorite times of year. We will be spending Christmas in Maui, then Cabo for New Year's. I can't wait!" There is nothing cheery or joyful about Hilton's photo and many are wondering who exactly she plans on sending it out to.

The photo looks more like a shot for a calendar or an upcoming album than a Christmas card.

Best Buy over estimates holiday shoppers' appetite

SHOPPERS IGNORED Best Buy Co Inc's promotion of pricey 3D televisions and other high-end gadgets this holiday season as they chased bargains elsewhere, hammering the company's profits.

The top electronics chain, seen as a bellwether in consumer electronics, surprised investors by reporting a drop in quarterly sales at existing stores and lower-than-expected earnings on Tuesday as demand for top-of-the-line televisions plunged. Its shares tumbled 14.8 percent.

The dismal report also pressured the shares of competitors such as RadioShack Corp and GameStop Corp, television manufacturers such as Sony Corp and television components makers such as Corning Inc, and raised concerns about holiday demand for gadgets.

"The newer technologies, like 3D and IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), which we assort more broadly than anyone, have been slower to take hold," Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn said on a conference call.

The lackluster showing also cast a shadow over the strength of the recovery in the consumer-driven U.S. economy, in contrast to better-than-expected November retail sales reported by the U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday. Shoppers told Reuters this week they were buying more, but focusing on simpler merchandise such as sweaters.

But later on Tuesday, the Federal Reserve said the U.S. economic recovery was still too feeble to cut unemployment, highlighting the fragile nature of the economy.

"Best Buy did not go deep enough discounting in TVs on Black Friday, likely the result of their desire to protect gross margins. We believe the mass merchants, particularly Target , were the incremental share gainers this year," Janney Capital markets analyst David Strasser said.

Cliff Draughn, president & chief investment officer at Excelsia Investment Advisors in Savannah, Georgia, said: "So the consumer this Christmas may be buying more and boosting a little bit in the retail side. The big ticket items, like the flat-screen TVs, the stereo systems it's not there. They can't afford those types of items.

"The television that sold for $5,000 three years ago sells for $1,500 today -- how many people need four flat-screen televisions in their apartment?"
Best Buy said it is now changing tack, promoting lower-priced 32-inch TVs in December and making price adjustments in its computer section after realizing "the consumer is definitely showing propensity at the low end."

"I think the U.S. consumer is carefully considering his or her wallet and what they are going to buy for their holiday gift-giving," Dunn told Reuters in an interview, adding he expects sales volumes to be "enormous" in the 10 days before and after Christmas.

Following Best Buy's disappointing earnings, Reuters analyst John Kozey does not like Best Buy as an investment and says shares could fall further in the near term.
"Best Buy is a stock to be traded, not invested in the long run," Kozey said.

BLEEDING MARKET SHARE

In its second holiday season after the bankruptcy of archrival Circuit City, Best Buy faces stiff competition from online retailer Amazon.com Inc and discounters such as WalMart Stores Inc and Target Corp.

Best Buy also said its U.S. market share fell 1.1 percentage points in the quarter on weaker-than-expected sales of TVs, laptops and video games. It blamed some of those losses on a decision to shift away from promoting lower-priced goods, then seeing shoppers gravitate to those brands anyway.
For fiscal 2011, Best Buy cut its profit per share forecast to about $3.20 to $3.40 a prior view of $3.55 to $3.70.

In the fiscal third quarter that ended November 27, net profit was $217 million, or 54 cents a share, compared with $227 million, or 53 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had forecast 61 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales fell 1 percent to $11.89 billion, missing analysts' average estimate of $12.45 billion. Domestic comparable-store sales declined 5 percent.
Best Buy shares closed down $6.18 at $35.52 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Retail stocks could stand out in Santa Claus rally

THIS YEAR'S miracle won't be limited to 34th Street. It will spill onto Wall Street as well. The recent agreement to extend the Bush-era tax cuts will help lift the markets in the final weeks of December, analysts say, with retail stocks expected to be among the top beneficiaries.

Late-year advances, known as "Santa Claus rallies" because of their proximity to Christmas, occur on a seasonal jump in bullish sentiment, as well as window dressing -- a strategy used by fund managers to improve the appearance of their funds by chasing strong performers.

It helps that stocks are already on an uptrend, with the Standard & Poor's 500 Index trading at two-year highs.Increased sentiment "is not totally uncommon at this time of year," said William Delwiche, an investment strategist at Robert W. Baird & Co in Nashville. "Year-end and holidays tend to make people cheerful and optimistic about the new year."

The gains, which can be amplified by the period's light trading volume, have helped make December an historically strong month.According to Thomson Reuters Datastream, the S&P 500 has gained an average of 1.5 percent in December since 1975, the third-best month behind April and November. The index is up 5 percent so far this month.

"Santa Claus rallies don't come on specific catalysts so much as an intangible sense out there, and this year that sense is strong and to the upside," said Joseph Greco, managing director at Meridian Equity Partners in New York.

"The tax deal gave us a huge shot in the arm, we're seeing consistent strength in retailers, and it's possible that we could get a move of 2.5 (percent) to 3 percent up from here," Greco said.

NICE COMEBACK FOR THE CONSUMER

Sentiment on retail stocks has been bullish lately, thanks to encouraging reads on consumer spending in the holiday shopping season. Analysts said the tax deal is adding to that positive bias.

"For the first time in several years, the consumer is back in play, especially if the tax deal comes through the way it has been proposed," said Timothy Harder, chief investment officer at Peak Capital Investment Services in Denver, which has about $600 million in assets under management. "As that becomes more certain, companies that target consumers will see that benefit."

While Santa Claus rallies unofficially run in the final week of the year, some retailers have already racked up strong gains. Abercrombie & Fitch has surged 11.3 percent in December so far, while luxury retailer Saks Inc is up 6.8 percent.

Despite an expected positive end to the year, issues may resurface in January as traders return from vacation and trading volume increases.

"We'll see Santa in December, but then comes the 'January effect' when institutions and managers either take money off the table or really get involved," Meridian's Greco said.According to Datastream, January is historically the fourth-best month of the year."I'm hopeful that once they get a read on how bullish things are, that'll stimulate them to keep things going."

Online bargain hunting spreads beyond Cyber Monday

EARLY DISCOUNTS may have taken some of the shine off Cyber Monday but the key online holiday shopping day is still expected to attract bargain hunters who may not have had their fill over the weekend.

Cyber Monday, a term coined five years ago for the day many people return to work after Thanksgiving and make online gift purchases on their computers remains a prime shopping day online. But its novelty has now been partially eclipsed by e-commerce promotions earlier in the season, including on Thanksgiving itself.

Retailers from BestBuy.com to Walmart.com and Staples.com have even opted to offer Cyber Monday deals one day early, on newly coined "Cyber Sunday."

The key is versatility, online experts say, as well as making sure shoppers heading to the Web always find something to inspire them to click on a sale.

John Thompson, senior vice president and general manager of BestBuy.com, said Cyber Monday remains a "really viable marketing concept," but smart retailers must offer choice. "There's demand out there, but you have consumers spending their time differently," he said. "If you don't have one group that shops early, you'll have those who say 'I'll enjoy my Thanksgiving and those same deals or as-good deals will be there Cyber Monday.'"

Marketing firms say tactics have changed in luring consumers to buy online. Whereas in prior years a full email inbox of online deals awaited those back at work on Monday, the offers now increasingly come on Black Friday if not before.

Disneystore.com, for one, had a "record sales day" on Thanksgiving, according to Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores.

U.S. online sales were up 33 percent on Thanksgiving this year, according to web analytics firm IBM Coremetrics.

Just as many promotions are sent via email on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, as on Cyber Monday, according to Responsys. And half of retailers planned to send email on Cyber Sunday as well as on Thanksgiving, the interactive marketing firm found.

PayPal, the online payments unit of eBay, said its first holiday spike in payment volume came on November 15. On Black Friday, total payment volume, or the total value of goods sold, rose 27 percent versus last year.

Online deals will continue throughout the holiday season. Amazon.com, the largest online retailer, said its Black Friday deals would last all week, while Target.com and eBay have set up daily deals through December.

BEST DEAL?

Despite the e-commerce selling season that now extends before and after Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving is still a prime focus of retailers.

Nine out of ten retailers planned to offer a promotion for Cyber Monday, Shop.org and BIGresearch found in a survey. That was more than the nearly three-quarters of respondents in 2007.

"Retailers have built it into the consumers mind: 'Here's the day you'll get the best deal,'" said IBM Coremetrics' Chief Strategy Officer John Squire.

Although some experts say the top online sales comes later in the season -- analytics firm Comscore, for one, found 2009's heaviest spending day fell on Dec 13 -- Squire said Cyber Monday was the best-performing day, with a 30 percent jump in U.S. online sales.

"You will see a similar type of gain on Cyber Monday (this year)," said Squire. "The big treat is what happens on Cyber Sunday for those retailers who give those deals."

Bullishness in advance of Monday was evident as Amazon shares closed at an all-time high last Wednesday leading into the Thanksgiving weekend, accompanied by options trading at over twice the average daily level.

On Tuesday, comScore raised its forecast for U.S. online holiday spending for the second time, saying it now expects an 11 percent rise over the 2009 holiday.

The new spending outlook should bring total holiday e-commerce spending to $32.4 billion, comScore said.

Online sales, while still growing, make up a mere 7 percent of the overall U.S. retail pie, according to comScore.

Best Buy HDTV Deals for Black Friday Online Sale

BLACK FRIDAY 2010, being one of the most awaited shopping getaways in the United States saw an active participation from people from all walks of life. Early birds across the US sweeped the offers off ranging from gadgets to TV’s to toys. However, many offers were not as intense as they were during Black Friday 2009.
This year’s major crowd puller was youngsters and teen shoppers who seemed to be enjoying each and every bit of what was being offered. 70 per cent of the US economy is dependent on customer’s spending parity. Although, people started queing up from early hours, statistics showed a markdown of 30 percent to 50 percent, which in most cases were prevalent.

In an interview, Macy's Inc CEO Terry Lundgren said that consumers are more focused on quality than in the last couple of years and There has been this strong message from consumers: 'I'm not just going to buy the least expensive sweater you have. I want to buy the sweater that is the best quality for the lowest price’.
Even though there is roughly about four weeks into Christmas and most of the customers doing last minute shopping, analysts claim that Black Friday is not a strong predictor for the season as a whole.

IF reports are to be believed, retail analysts who were seen scanning shopping malls to major retail outlets to keep a track of the traffic levels reported discounts close to 30 per cent for apparel and accessories. Meanwhile, discounts on flat TV screens with older technologies fell steeply. People who have change the differentiation in the pricing dynamics claim that everything is more expensive this year than last year.

Black Friday sees endless wait from ardent shoppers

U.S. SHOPPERS searched for deals on high-definition televisions and popular toys early on Friday, as retailers hoped that Black Friday would kick off the best holiday shopping season in three years.

While some stores were open on Thursday and many retailers have offered Black Friday deals for weeks, shoppers still lined up late Thursday and early Friday for the annual day after Thanksgiving bargain hunt.

Black Friday is a term adopted by retailers to refer to the time of year when their businesses move into the black, or turns a profit. This year their aim is expected to be about keeping sales momentum that has picked up modestly this year as the economy recovers.

Shoppers were disappointed in some of the offers they could see, although they were still waiting in line for hours before they could get in the door.

"I'm looking at the TV and it says save $70 and I'm like, come on, you've got to be kidding," said Sanjay Patil, as he waited outside a Best Buy Co Inc in Princeton, New Jersey, along with about 50 other bargain hunters before midnight, even though the electronics retailer said stores open at 5 am.

"If it's Black Friday, it has to be 100 or 120 bucks savings minimum."

Others were anticipating the bargains they hoped to get. Nandini Ramkissoon, 19, staked out a spot near the stacks of $69 Blu-ray Disc players and $198 HDTVs set to go on sale at 5 a.m. (1000 GMT) inside a Wal-Mart in Secaucus, N.J.

"Wal-Mart is pretty good because they're letting their customers inside before time, and it's really cool," Ramkissoon said.

She and her parents arrived at 7 pm on Thursday, 10 hours early, to make sure they could get the TV they wanted.

Wal-Mart opened many of its U.S. discount stores on Thanksgiving Day and the doors stayed open overnight, a tactic it adopted after an employee was trampled to death two years ago on Black Friday.

Thanksgiving Day 2010 to enthrall shoppers

FORGET THE turkey and the football-if it's Thanksgiving, why aren't you shopping?

U.S. retailers trying to squeeze every extra cent out of shoppers are opening forThanksgiving on Thursday, trying to get a jump on the holiday shopping season.

Among the retailers that will open on Thursday are Wal-Mart Stores Inc's U.S. discount stores, 850 of Gap Inc's Old Navy stores, as well as some of its Gap and Banana Republic stores; and Sears Holdings Corp's namesake department stores, and Kmart discount stores.

For retailers, opening the stores amount to extra sales at the start of what is expected to be the best holiday shopping season since 2007 before falling home prices, tight credit and soaring unemployment forced consumers to cut spending. The holiday season is essential for many retailers, who depend on it for a big part of their profits for the year.

But people shopping on Thursday will still only be a fraction of the 138 million the National Retail Federation hopes to see on Black Friday, the next day.

"It's an add-on," Brian Sozzi, an analyst at Wall Street Strategies, said of stores opening on Thanksgiving Thursday.

"If one of the retailers that is open on Thanksgiving has a bad day, I don't think it is going to make or break the season."
